Please do not attempt to complete the final application until you have compiled all of the required materials listed on the Final Application checklist.

Feel free to look at the positions posted on the website. However, remember that new positions will be posted to the ASE website throughout the month of February, so take this into account in selecting your positions. In this case, the early bird doesn't necessarily get the worm. Check the listing of internships several times before ranking your top three choices.

ASE Essay Writing and Interview Workshops

The 2010 ASE Essay Writing Workshop and the ASE Interview Workshop registrations are open!

WORKSHOP REGISTRATION FORM

During the workshops you learn to polish important writing and interviewing skills that will help you through the ASE application process and future endeavors as well.

During the Essay Workshop you will:

· Identify your own skills and experiences and learn how to present them to make your application stand out to mentors.

· Learn how to make your essays more professional

· Have the opportunity to get feedback on your essay drafts

During the Interview Workshop you will:

· Learn valuable interviewing skills

· Build your confidence for interviews

During both workshops you will:

· Learn about the ASE application and selection process

· Meet an ASE representative

· Meet students from different schools with similar interests

SPACE IS LIMITED in each workshop, so please register early! We hope to see you there! Oh and these are FREE workshops!

Adult Recommendation Form Available Online

ASE applicants must submit two (2) adult recommendations as part of their final application. The person can be a teacher, counselor, coach or some other non-relative that knows your intellectual interest, academic ability and character. We strongly suggest that at least one of your recommenders be a science, math or computer teacher.

Applicants: In 2010, we will only accept recommendations submitted via online form by adult recommenders. They must have your full name, preferred email address, and ASE ID Number to complete your online recommendation - you received your ASE ID Number via email after submitting your preliminary application. Your email address will be used to send you a confirmation email, letting you know the recommendation has been successfully completed. Please give the person recommending you ample time to complete the form and indicate that it must be submitted by Monday, February 22, 2010.

Teachers & other Adult Recommenders: We strongly advise that you provide an institutional email address provided for you by the school or other employer when completing the online recommendation form. You will automatically receive an email confirmation at this address upon successful completion of the form, and you will see a report of exactly what you submitted for the applicant. The applicant will also receive an email confirmation, but it will NOT include the report. If you do not receive an email confirmation after submitting a recommendation or if you unexpectedly receive one for a recommendation you did not complete, please contact ASE staff right away.

FAQ: Final Application, Position Descriptions and ASE ID Numbers

We have received a number of inquiries about how to access 2010 ASE position descriptions and the final application, as well as how to “log in” to the website with usernames and passwords. Just to make sure everyone is informed about the final application process, here is our first FAQ for ASE 2010:

Position Descriptions

We will be posting the ASE 2010 position descriptions on our website in late January, after the preliminary application deadline of January 15th. The ASE 2010 position description list and final application are not yet active online. We plan on sending an email to all preliminary applicants letting them know that the position descriptions are posted online, and that they may proceed onto the final application stage.

Final Application

As mentioned above, the final application will not be available until after the preliminary application deadline of January 15, 2010. We will email everyone who has completed the preliminary application when the final application goes live online. Following is a helpful final application checklist, which is also available on our website:

ASE ID Number

The username and password fields on the website are not used for the ASE application process. Rather, ASE applicants will use their ASE ID Number in a specified final application field and their adult recommenders will need to have this ID number (along with applicant date of birth) when they submit their recommendations online.

Adult Recommendation Deadline – Monday, February 22, 2010

We have recently received some inquiries regarding final installments of ASE stipends. While we stated in ASE materials that final checks would be mailed on or right after the Symposium, for administrative reasons we were not able to order these checks until the end of August. My apologies for our miscommunication – I hope we have not caused any major inconvenience.

Your final check will be mailed today, Wednesday, September 2^nd. If you do not receive it by the end of the week, please call or email to let me know.

Again, I am sincerely sorry for our error in communicating the stipend schedule – I know many of you rely on these checks as income.

Dear ASE Intern,

We had originally planned on sending your thank you letter lists today, but need an extra day to compile them. The list of mentors, co-mentors and benefactors to whom you will be writing thank you letters will be emailed to you this coming Monday, August 3. As a result, we are pushing back the thank you letter deadline to Monday, August 10.

We strongly encourage you to go ahead and start drafting your thank you letters this weekend, if you have not yet done so. You can adjust the letters for individual people once your receive the thank you list on Monday. Please type your letters on the ASE letterhead and closely follow the thank you letter instructions, emailed to you today. Let us know if you have any problems downloading or using these materials.

Note that the Symposium registration deadline is still Friday, August 7! If you have not already done so, please register online in the next week. You may also order ASE t-shirts until the same date.

If you have co-mentors whom you wish to recognize, but you missed the deadline to enter in the online co-mentor form, please enter them right away. The online co-mentor form will be re-opened over the weekend, but will be closed again on Monday.

ASE Symposium Registration and Info

We trust your internship is going well so far and that your projects are coming along nicely. The ASE Symposium is just around the corner, on Thursday, August 20, 2009 at Portland State University. You must register online for the Symposium by Friday, August 7 (see details below). Family and other guests are welcome to attend – be sure to include their full names in your registration form.

Most of the day’s events will take place at the Native American Student & Community Center (710 SW Jackson Street) and at University Place (310 SW Lincoln Street). Please refer to the Campus Map and the attachment for directions.

The Symposium will take place from 12:00pm – 7:00pm; please refer to the general schedule below. We will provide you with a more detailed schedule of events in the coming weeks.

We want to make sure that you’re starting to prepare for your poster and oral presentation, and have compiled some information for you in this email. On website you'll find a Symposium Preparation Handbook, which outlines details for creating posters and PowerPoint presentations, how to practice your oral presentation, and how to be ready the day of the Symposium.

Please remember, you must register for the Symposium by Thursday, August 7!

Before you complete the registration form, you will need to be prepared with:

· your transportation plan for getting to the Symposium (Corvallis/PDX shuttle provided by ASE, your own transport, etc.)

· titles for your oral presentation and poster, and any special equipment your may need

· names of your guests, and whether they wish to purchase food

Once you are ready with this information, you may proceed to the Symposium Registration form.

You can help us make sure we don't overlook anyone who has provided significant guidance during your ASE internship (supervisors, graduate students, college interns, etc.). Please complete a Co-Mentor Designation Form by Wednesday, July 29.

As part of your ASE internship, you are expected to write thank you letters to your mentors, co-mentors and benefactors. Please see the attached document, providing detailed instructions on how to write thank you letters. We will send you a list of your thank you letter recipients and their addresses next week via email, along with ASE digital letterhead. We encourage you to begin drafting a thank you letter now. Thank you letters must be completed by Friday, August 7.

It was great to see you all at the Midsummer Conference two weeks ago! We would appreciate it if you took the time to complete a Midsummer Conference Survey. Your feedback helps us to improve our summer program and bring back your favorite presenters for future ASE interns.

Successful Midsummer Conference!

Thanks to all who participated in the Midsummer Conference at Oregon State University on July 10th. More than 30 presenters provided substantive and engaging experiences in 18 workshops and seminars covering a diverse range of topics. The weather was warm but reasonably cooperative -- not too much wind during the tower building competition! We will provide the opportunity for feedback with an on-line form soon.

Midsummer Conference Registration

We hope your ASE internships are getting off to a great start. The 2009 ASE Midsummer Conference is fast approaching! The event will be held all day on Friday, July 10, 2009 at Oregon State University.

You will need to register for the Midsummer Conference at this link by Sunday, July 5th at 5:00pm. Rank your top two choices for Interactive Workshop #1, Interactive Workshop #2, and the Seminar. We have many exciting workshops and seminars led by amazing scientists, so it may be hard to narrow them down! Note the MSC Workshop/Seminar Menu for more details.

In addition, please indicate on the form how you plan on getting to the Midsummer Conference in Corvallis (round trip or one-way bus ride, or your own transport) and if you have any serious dietary restrictions.

Get Ready for the Midsummer Conference!

July 10th will be here soon. Get ready to work a little, play a little and learn a lot! The Midsummer Conference at Oregon State University will be a great opportunity to meet other ASE interns and learn about their summer experiences. Stay tuned for the on-line MSC registration where you will learn about the workshops and seminars offered. The on-line registration form will be available the week before the Conference.

Portland area students will have the opportunity to ride a bus to the Midsummer Conference. The cost for bus transportation is $20.00, which includes a box breakfast. If interested, please reserve space on one of the buses when you register on-line. Students selecting the bus transportation option should plan on being at the designated location to load onto buses by 6 a.m. on July 10th. The location has not been determined yet.

Congratulations to the Winners of the 2009 Intel Northwest Science Expo, including the following former ASE Apprentices:

Kevin Ellis, 2007 ASE Apprentice: Physical Science Best in Fair Award! Kevin also received the IEEE Special Award sponsored by IEEE Oregon and the Intel Excellence in Computer Science Award sponsored by the Intel Corporation. For more information, see the April 8^th ASE blog.

William Han, 2008 ASE Apprentice: 1^st Place for high school students in the category of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering! William received the IEEE Special Award sponsored by IEEE Oregon and a University of Oregon Scholarship. He was selected to be a Physical Science alternate for the upcoming Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Reno.

Alex McCarthy, 2008 ASE Apprentice: 1^st Place High School Chemistry Award! Alex also received the Outstanding Chemistry Project Award sponsored by the American Chemical Society, Portland Section.

Priyam Shah, 2007 ASE Apprentice: 1^st Place High School Earth Science Award! Priyam received the Excellence in Statistics Award sponsored by the American Statistical Association and the Taking the Pulse of the Planet Award sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Priyam received an OSU College of Science Scholarship as well.

Maryann Tung, 2008 ASE Apprentice: 2^nd Place High School Engineering Materials and Bioengineering Award! Maryann received the Outstanding Chemistry Related Project Award sponsored by Iota Sigma Pi and the Outstanding Applied or Practical Chemistry Project by a Junior or Senior Award sponsored by the Portland Industrial Chemists’ Association/American Chemical Society. ASE Final Applicants and Parents,

We have been receiving many email and phone inquiries about the ASE selection process and interviews. Many of these questions can be answered by a March 31 blog entry, but we want to be sure that everyone is informed:

Mentors have until Wednesday, April 22 to make their selections for ASE positions. ASE Staff will be making personal phone calls to every final applicant between Thursday, April 23 and Monday, May 4, informing you of your selection status. We will NOT be able to respond to your selection inquiries prior to this time period, so please wait until we call you first.
Not all ASE mentors conduct interviews as part of their selection process. Please do not be concerned if you are not called for an interview - it may have no bearing on whether you get a position. We ASE staff do not play any role in selecting interns for positions and do not know which mentors conduct/do not conduct interviews.

We understand it's an anxiety-inducing period to wait for an answer and appreciate you patience as we prepare to receive internship selections.

Kevin Ellis, 2007 ASE Intern, Wins Big at Northwest Science Expo

Kevin Ellis of Catlin Gable presented his science research project at the statewide science fair, the Northwest Science Expo.

Kevin, a Junior, won Best of Fair in the physical sciences division, 1st place in computer science, the Intel Excellence in Computer Science award, and the IEEE Special Award in Computer Software Engineering.

Kevin had previously qualified to represent Oregon at the International Science and Engineering Fair.

Final Applications are Being Reviewed!

We have received 325 final applications this year. Mentors will have about a month to review the applications and in the next couple of weeks you may be contacted by a mentor for a phone or in-person interview. Not all mentors conduct interviews, so do not be concerned if an interview is not requested. About 100 interns will be selected in all.

You will be receiving a personal phone call from ASE staff sometime between April 23rd and the week of May 4th notifying you of your status. Feel free to contact us if you have questions between now and then. Congratulations on completing your applications!

Visual Adrenaline is our software developer program for visual computing. As part of the team, you will work with team members and external gaming and graphics companies to create short video clips that showcase the difference that using and optimizing for Intel technologies make in applications. Position #71 - Substation Grounding Grid Analysis

Substation Design (TESD) is responsible for supporting the design of the outdoor portion of BPA's power substations and electrical facilities, coordinating specifications, and ordering materials for construction of these facilities. Support and expertise is provided to other BPA organizations in development of plans, estimates, customer agreements, contract management, and resolution of field problems.

Over the years, BPA has become concerned that numerous grounding grids in BPA substations may have become deficient and no longer meet safety guidelines. BPA has tested the grounding at nearly all its substations and has a large database compiled with the results.

The apprentice will screen the data using station specific ground grid configuration information which will help identify which substations require further attention. The apprentice will gather data; enter data and perform computer analysis; interpret results and create summary reports. Applicants should have experience running computers, be well organized and have good math and writing skills.

Position is open to 9-11th grade students. Prerequisites include: basic computer experience; well organized; strong math and writing skills.

The Food Innovation Center is a joint venture between Oregon State University and the Oregon Department of Agriculture, located in Northwest Portland. The center conducts research work in developing better food processing and packaging technology for the food industry. It also provides technical support and lab testing services to food companies to help them develop new and healthy food products, and improve their current products for better quality and shelf life .

The research work will focus on development of new food processing applications using novel CO2 laser material processing technology to improve the quality of food products and enhance the productivity of food production systems. The research will study how laser material processing technology can be used to facilitate food infusion and dehydration process by altering surface attributes of various food materials compared to the traditional mechanical cutting and drilling methods.

The intern will assist mentor with projects including sample preparation, collecting research data, basic data analysis, and conducting some lab testing work under the supervision of the mentor or other lab technicians.

Position #69 - Communications Engineering for Electric Grid

The Bonneville Power Administration is part of the Department of Energy. BPA generates and distributes power throughout the Northwest and adjacent areas. The Power System Control Technical Group is responsible for support of the power grid's communications system. The PSC Technical Group provides testing, documentation, and training for this part of BPA's transmission system, and is essentially a specialized miniature lab and training center. The Group is located on the Ross Complex in Vancouver, Washington.

At the core of the Power System Control Technical Group is a classroom that contains representative equipment from the entire power system. We use this classroom to train field crews on the maintenance, repair, and operation of communications equipment, and to help troubleshoot actual system problems when they arise. The student's project is to document the layout of the classroom, to test and verify wiring and configuration of the communications equipment, to suggest and implement improvements to the layouts and installed equipment, and to standardize the layout of the classroom. The types of communications equipment include analog radio at several frequencies, digital radio, digital multiplexers, fiber optics amplifiers, fiber multiplexers, digital and analog transfer trip devices, System Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), ethernet routers and switches, and Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) devices including remote alarm systems. Given time and interest, other projects will include working in our communications parts room to configure, test, and document our emergency spares, and to assist in acceptance testing for new types of communications equipment.

The student will be documenting the classroom using digital photography, MS Word, Excel, and drawing software of their choice. They will be testing wiring using digital communications test sets (for Digital Signal 1, Ethernet, and other electrical signals) and testing optical cables using a laser source and power meter. Performance testing of specific communications equipment will require additional test setups. There will be a mix of collaborative and independent work. Other projects may require overnight travel, but that will be strictly optional for the student.

Must have completed junior year by start of internship. Math, science, and basic physics backgrounds are important. Attention to detail, self-motivation, independence and a willingness to ask questions are vital. Work in the classroom will require the use of short ladders, a limited amount of crawling, and the ability to lift approximately 30 lbs. Basic skills with Windows and Microsoft Office is required.

Wednesday, March 4th - Essay Writing Workshop at CAL!

The first Essay Writing Workshop will be held on March 4th from 6-8 p.m. It will be located at The Center for Advanced Learning in Room 301. CAL's street address is 1484 SW Civic Drive in Gresham.

Specific directions:
The Center for Advance Learning is located on SW Civic Drive just south of SE Burnshide Street and just north of NW Division Street in Gresham, Oregon on the east side of Civic Drive. The building has a sign stating "CAL" on the street side. The Gresham Station mall is located on Division Street within blocks of the center if a parent needs a place to wait.

If traveling from the west side or inner east side of Portland, get on I-84 eastbound. Take the 181st Avenue exit (#13) and turn right. In about 1.3 miles, turn left on E Burnside Street, which becomes SE Burnside Road. In about 1.9 miles, turn right onto Civic Drive. CAL is the last building on the left before you cross the MAX tracks.

Position Number #67 - Craniofacial Bone Development in Stickleback Fish

Here's an excerpt from the description that can be found HERE:

How bones develop different forms is important for understanding evolutionary diversity (the difference between your skull and T. rex's, for example), as well as for understanding what goes wrong in craniofacial birth defects such as cleft palate. We will study a small set of neighboring skull bones that function together in feeding and breathing in stickleback fishes developing from embryos to adults.

The intern will help breed the adult fish, to obtain fertilized eggs, and then rear these eggs through embryonic and larval stages under standardized conditions in our lab facility. Groups of bones and individual bones will be identified in these preparations, and delicately dissected out and isolated. Then the isolated bones are photographed, and their forms analyzed in detail from the photographs.

As a reminder, the ASE final application fee for 2009 is $25.00.

It must be paid by check (made out to Saturday Academy) and included within the sealed envelope containing your transcript and two adult letters of recommendation.

If you (the applicant) qualify for the Federal Free or Reduced Price Lunch program you do not have to pay the application fee. However, you must contact Andrea (andrea@saturdayacademy.org) to confirm your eligibility.

The application fee is necessary to cover the cost of scanning and processing all final application materials.

ASE 2009 Final Application Goes Live!

Dear ASE community,

The Final Application is available!

For those that have completed the Phase I application and received your Unique Identifier # (in email dated 2/16/09), please feel free to apply.

As a reminder, the online application is a "one-shot" session- we encourage you to have already written your 3 targeted essays for your top 3 ranked internships in a MS Word document so that you may copy/paste the essay directly into the online application.

Further, your hard-copy materials (HS transcript & 2 x letter of recommendations) must be mailed (post marked by Thur 3/12/09) in one large sealed envelope, along with your $25.00 (application fee) check to ASE (830 SW 10th Ave Suite 200 Portland, OR 97205).

We have 66 unique internships (some hosting multiple interns) available as of today- however, we do expect this number to increase- please check the ASE blog and consider submitting your application materials closer to the deadline if you are interested in potential internships, not yet available.

Some internships offer stipends, others do not, while some internships have not confirmed stipend amount. Please check the ASE blog for clarification/updates. All selected ASE interns who qualify for the Federal Free/Reduced Price Lunch Program will automatically be awarded a $2,000.00 stipend from Saturday Academy (regardless of respective stipend).

Deadlines: online application completed by 5pm 3/16/09. Hard copy materials (transcript, 2 x letters of recommendation, check for $25.00) submitted in one large sealed envelope postmarked by Thursday 3/12/09, or delivered in person by 5pm on 3/16/09 to Saturday Academy (address above).

Starting this year, this blog and our website will serve as primary modes of communication about ASE. We will regularly post updates regarding applications, positions, and events - so this is your best place to get the latest information about the program.

We think it is important for you to have your own ASE forum where you can share ASE internship experiences, ideas, and socialize with like-minded students. To this end, there is a Facebook group for ASE, where you can meet new ASE interns and ASE alumni. In the spring, we will also be launching a networking group specific to 2009 ASE interns.
